Cavolo Nero Banana Smoothie with Frozen Banana Vitamix Recipe

Cavolo nero banana smoothie may not sound that appealing but it’s sweetened with frozen banana chunks and agave nectar. Packed with all the nutrients you’d expect in dark green brassica veg, it’s a worthy contribution to your five a day without being as punitive as you might imagine. My Vitamix power blender was originally gifted by their PR company but this post was written a couple of years later and not commissioned by the brand. Edit 2025: I’m happy to report the Vitamix has been going strong for over twelve years.

Mornings are not the same for me lately without my therapeutic whizzing up of fruit, veg and seeds in the Vitamix but it’s my steady supply of frozen bananas that helps keep them nicely thick and cold. I kid myself I’m drinking burger bar milkshakes!

Freezing banana in chunks has been a game changer for never wasting rapidly ripening bananas. You can use frozen banana chunks in either smoothies or no churn ice creams (try my Vitamix raspberry no churn ice cream, it’s wonderful).

I freeze my banana chunks by laying them out on a sheet of baking parchment paper on the slim drawer that sits inside one of my main freezer drawers. If you nudge the banana chunks fairly close (but not touching), you can fit 4 or 5 banana’s worth of 1.5-2 inch chunks on there. But how many you get depends on the size of your freezer. Freezing banana chunks on a flat surface like this means they don’t stick together as much when you bag them up.

So we have been buying a lot of bananas lately. Double the bunches so we have some to eat straight away and a supply to bag up in the freezer.

I managed to recruit a little helper to peel the bananas. Ted is into jokes at the moment and chuckled to me yesterday, “Why did the banana go to the doctor?”

I don’t know Ted, why did the banana go to the doctor?

“Because he wasn’t peeling very well.” Bah-bum. Although rather obvious I must admit I’d not heard it before.

Cavolo Nero Banana Smoothie

Super easy smoothie recipe using dark green cavolo nero cabbage sweetened with banana.

Equipment

  • Vitamix Power Blender

Ingredients

  • 3 leaves cavolo nero
  • 250 g frozen banana (pre-freeze banana in chunks)
  • 600 ml oat milk (or dairy milk if not necessary to be dairy free)
  • 1 tbsp agave nectar
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds (plus a few extra for optional garnish)

Instructions

  • Tumble the ingredients into a Vitamix or power blender.
  • Blitz until smooth. That's it. If there's a smoothie program, use that.
